Critters From the Snorkel Trail

I'd never seen one of these before.

I got a blurry picture of its face that looks like it has 2 eyes or something right in the middle.

This will undoubtedly lead to more time on the internet.

Snorkel Trail

While Lisa was a nurse in Richmond, VA, she helped a man through his last days who told her about a snorkel trail he helped set up on the far away island of St. Croix. "If you ever get down there, check it out" he said.

We ended up moving here and taking a look at his trail and were disappointed with the state it was in.

This week I managed to get onto a crew that went out and restored the man's legacy.

60 Miles

We did it!

I met two of my girlfriends from college in DC this past week and we completed the Susan G. Komen 3-Day 60 Mile walk to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer.

A little knitting went a long way in making things more interesting.

It was an incredible experience and I am very thankful for all of the support and generous donations from friends and family.

Now that I've walked 60 miles

I need to decide what to accomplish next.

USS? VICTORY

The charts show a wreck a little south of the end of the pier in about 90ft of water.

I swam out to check it out and found what I'm told is the wreck of the Victory at 105ft.
No one seems to know much about it. I've heard that the Navy used to do a lot of submarine training around here back in the 50's and 60's and that this may have been a target for dummy torpedos.

I'll have to ask around some more.

Orchids!!!

We brought this orchid home from a hike up in the rainforest back at the beginning of February. Its been living on our dining room table ever since. Not only have we managed to not kill it, but evidently we've done something right!

Stripper Pole

When the old pier was being cleaned up after being destroyed by hurricane Hugo years ago, one of the I-beams slipped off of a barge and impaled the reef below.

So now, 20 years or so later, we have Stripper Pole. Its nearly perfectly vertical from about 105 feet deep up to around 40 feet.

Experimentation

Been trying to feed the lionfish I kill to various other guys to help them develop an appetite.

This octopus reached out and grabbed the lionfish on my spear until he saw me and got shy.

Visitors From North Carolina

A couple of summers ago, when I worked off of the coast of NC, these guys schooled by the hundreds at some of the dive sites. There's one spot down here where a few can usually be found, but I'm convinced that these guys are here to get away from they turbid waters up north caused by the recent hurricane activity up there.
