Donkey Derby

That's right. Donkey races.

$5 gets you in the gates.
Getting in the gates means you can sign up to ride in a heat race.
The competition was fierce
(and hilarious)

and the food was delicious.
Wait...pork and what?!

Oh, right. Titty bread.

"Get your ass over here" was said more than once.

The winners of the heat races had a run off for the JackAss Cup.
Some managed to get the donkeys going in a straight line- straight though the barriers and crowd. Some even got them to do laps by chasing after them after being bucked off.
But one fine donkey jockey hung on for dear life for 3 laps around the (mostly destroyed by that point) ring.

This year's winner of the JackAss Cup.

Training starts now.

'Pede

Shortly after Jeff left for work yesterday one of my biggest island fears dropped into my laundry basket and scared the bejeezus out of me.

It was a centipede.

It was only about 3 inches long, but don't let that fool you. That sucker was scary. Although they rarely cause long term damage, the centipede's bite will deliver some serious pain that lasts, so I've heard, about 12 hours.

I was not having that. I tied the dog up outside and got my gear ready.

After a lot of scurrying on its part and possibly some high pitched screaming on mine, I conquered the centipede! I chopped that sucker into three pieces and when they kept crawling, I put them in rum (I've heard rum kills them. Come on, this is the Caribbean, we use rum for everything.).

I've felt all creepy crawley ever since.

Rain Delay

It's been raining here for at least 5 days. On day 1 our internet server was apparently struck by lightning. Around that same time, our cell phone tower stopped sending/receiving clear signals. We hope to be back in the land of the technologically advanced soon - we miss you!

P.S. the storm became Tropical Storm Bonnie the day after it left us.

Mango Melee

I never realized that there were so many varieties of mango. Here are 6.

And here are over 30 more represented at the annual mango festival!

We arrived too late for most of the recipe contests and activities, and even missed out on the mango ice cream (had to settle for soursop), but we were right on time for the mango eating contest.
The winner is the first person to eat 8 mangoes-

with one hand.
