Chaney

I found my first piece of chaney yesterday around the ruins of the former Estate Canaan.

Chaney is a contraction of "china" and "money". It is the fragments of plantation-era china that are scattered all over the old plantation sites here. I've heard stories ranging from it just being old broken dishes thrown out to it being the result of emancipation riots where slaves broke in to the Great Houses and smashed up all the stuff inside.
This particular piece is not very fancy- most pieces I've seen are the pictorial bits of blue and white china, but this little edge piece is my first and I couldn't be happier about it.

Hopefully I'll have more to show off before long.
